Automatic Metal Spring Door Closer

An automatic metal spring door closer is a mechanical device designed to automatically bring a door back to its closed position using a spring mechanism. Unlike hydraulic or pneumatic closers, this type relies primarily on the stored energy in a metal spring to perform the closing action.

1. Spring Mechanism

   • A strong metal or torsion spring that stores energy when the door is opened.

   • When released, the spring contracts, pulling or pushing the door closed.

2. Body / Housing

   • Usually made of metal (steel, zinc alloy, or aluminum), giving it durability and strength.Mounted either on the door frame or door leaf, depending on design.

3. Connecting Rod / Arm

   • An arm or rod connects the spring housing to the door. As the door opens, this arm moves and causes the spring to be compressed or twisted.

   • When the door is released, the arm transfers the spring’s energy back to the door.

4. Adjustment Mechanism

   • Many spring door closers are adjustable: you can change the spring tension or “tightness” so you control how forcefully or gently the door closes. 

   • Some use a small Allen key or screw for adjustment. 

   • There may also be speed control or damping, depending on design.

5. Mounting Hardware

   • Screws or bolts for attaching the closer to the door or frame.

   • Sometimes a roller or nylon wheel to make the movement smoother or quieter. 

   • How It Works

     • When you open the door, the spring inside the closer is compressed or twisted, storing energy. Once you release the door, the spring releases that stored energy, pulling the door back toward the closed position.

     • Depending on the design, the closer may have a damping mechanism (e.g., a piston or throttle valve) or simply rely on the spring to regulate closing speed. The closure speed and spring strength can be adjusted so the door doesn’t slam shut or stays slightly open before fully latching.
